The ceremony at the Ia\u0219i Jewish cemetery was held in the presence of representatives of the Romanian government, the leadership of the city of Ia\u0219i, and the local Jewish community.<br><br>The ceremony opened with the recitation of Kaddish by the Chief Rabbi of Romania, Rabbi Rafael Shaffer, after which the President delivered remarks in memory of the victims of the pogrom. The President then took part in a reburial ceremony for the remains of 22 victims of the pogrom, which were recently identified.<br><br>The ceremony was held against the backdrop of the shared commitment of Israel and Romania to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and the history of Romanian Jewry.<br><br><strong>President Isaac Herzog:<\/strong><br><br>\u201cIt is with humility and trepidation that I have come from Jerusalem, with the blessings of the nation of Israel, to stand here today, as President of the State of Israel, to meet this solemn duty of remembrance.<br><br><strong>\u201cThis act of remembrance for the many thousands of Jewish women, men, children, and elderly murdered on this soil, in Ia\u0219i and its surroundings between June 28 and July 6, 1941, does not erase the suffering of the victims. Nor does it lessen the ethical stain of the perpetrators. It does not undo the murder, the humiliation, the beatings, or the death trains, orchestrated high up, but unleashed across every level of society, during those infernal summer days, 85 years ago.<\/strong><br><br>\u201cNor does it help us make sense of this simple but burning question: How? How can cruelty of this scope, across an entire society, possibly be comprehended? How could it have been possible that in this great European city, which for centuries served as a thriving center of Jewish life, how could the erasure of the Image of God have occurred? The only answer to this bewildering question is: a deafening silence.<br><br>\u201cElie Wiesel, the Romanian-born teacher, author, activist, and Nobel prize laureate who died exactly ten years ago, helped solidify the memory of the Holocaust as a resounding awakening of the human conscience. Wiesel, who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, wrote the following about the Ia\u0219i pogrom: &#8216;From the simple soldier to the high-ranking officer; from the anonymous employee, to the official invested with the high and implacable authority of the state, the Jews of Ia\u0219i could not expect any trace of compassion or humanity.&#8217;<br><br>\u201cFrom Elie Wiesel&#8217;s words, a gut-wrenching truth emerges: These murderers were human beings, just like us. They lived in regular homes, held regular jobs, and led their lives just like you, just like me. Just like the victims who lie right here before our eyes, just like the victims of the death trains. These Jews who found their deaths in the demonic rage of the Ia\u0219i masses, these Jews who are being brought to dignified burial, scream to us across the divide of decades.<br><br><strong>\u201cWe cannot escape this truth, and we cannot afford for this truth to fade into a memory that serves as a passive tribute to the past. What happened here must drive us to ask ourselves what kind of world does our remembrance call us to build, in the present. That is why it is our obligation to ensure that every son and daughter of this land, and of Europe, and of the world, learn of this horror and its shamefulness, visit this site, and engage with this painful history.<\/strong><br><br>\u201cMy friends, it is no coincidence that in this very town, decades before the Ia\u0219i pogrom and massacre, Naftali Herz Imber wrote the first draft of what would become the Israeli national anthem: Hatikvah, The Hope. Imagine, as we stand here, in this somber, sobering place, we note that our nation&#8217;s hope emerged from Ia\u0219i. Naftali Herz Imber&#8217;s words became the anthem of that great human movement, Zionism, that saw Jews take their destiny in their own hands, and establish a Jewish national home in the land of Israel.<br><br>\u201cIt was in fact Romanian Jews who established some of the earliest communities in Israel, such as Rosh Pina in 1882. They channeled their blood, sweat, and tears into the great Jewish and human endeavor of renewed Jewish statehood. Steeped in Romanian culture, they were at the heart of Israel&#8217;s evolution, and to this day remain a vital, living link between Romania and the Jewish people. Here with us today are Israelis born in Romania, and descendants of those pioneering Romanian Jews, and descendants of survivors.<br><br>\u201c<strong>It is therefore all the more alarming that in too many places across Europe, and through the sinister influence of an evil empire that traffics in hatred, antisemitism is again rearing its ugly head. The moral infrastructure that humanity established in response to the moral destruction of the Holocaust is weaker than it has been for eighty years. This is a danger for Jews, this is a danger for all people of goodwill. It is therefore our shared responsibility to recognize and name this danger, to actively embrace the moral calling it invokes, and to fiercely combat it. Let that be the lesson of Ia\u0219i.<\/strong><br><br>\u201cI want to express my gratitude to the Mayor of Ia\u0219i, Mihai Chirica, a great friend of the Jewish people and Israel, for his leadership and relentless efforts to maintain the memory and teach it. I thank the President, parliament, the senate, and the government of Romania for their staunch combat against antisemitism and hatred, for their dedication to memory, for their deep solidarity with the Jewish people and with the State of Israel at a time in which courage is, once again, demanded of us.<br>\u201cTomorrow I will be addressing the Romanian parliament in Bucharest, to pay tribute to the friendship and goodwill between our nations, and to salute the future we share.
