President Herzog Meets with Widower of Filipino National Killed in Iranian Missile Attack

On March 12, 2026, President Isaac Herzog met at the President’s Residence with Bernie Galsim Lavarias, the widower of the late Mary Ann V. De Vera, a Filipino national who was killed in an Iranian missile attack on Tel Aviv last week. The meeting took place with the participation of the Ambassador of the Philippines to Israel, Aileen Mendiola.

President Herzog expressed his deepest condolences to Mr. Lavarias and the Filipino people. The President conveyed his profound appreciation for the contribution of the Filipino community to Israeli society and the significance of the deep bonds between our peoples.

President Isaac Herzog:

“We are devastated by the terrible loss of Mary Ann. On behalf of the State of Israel, I send my deepest condolences to her family and the entire nation of the Philippines.
“Mary Ann was an angel. She was a hero, as she saved Mrs. Rachel Shihror during the missile attack. So many Israelis were hurt by and took to heart the loss of Mary Ann.

“I cannot change this terrible fate, unfortunately, but as a word of some remorse and condolences, I say thank you to you Bernie, and to what you have done. I also want to extend my deepest appreciation for the incredible work and contribution of the Filipino community in Israel. You are deeply respected and loved by the Israeli people.”

Ambassador of the Philippines to Israel, Aileen Mendiola:

“It was our President who broke the news that Mary Ann was killed. He informed the public about it. Mary Ann is not the only Filipino killed in this war. Four Filipino nationals were killed on October 7th. Two were also held hostage. One person was also killed in the last war, and unfortunately this time again. Mary Ann was the first casualty of this war.

“It pains us, but when you ask the Filipino community, many choose to remain because they see themselves as a partner and a family member.”
